Bezel Set Lock of George Washington's Hair,
early 19th century.
The silver bezel with beveled glass set enclosing several strands of sandy-colored hair surrounded by two rings of seed pearls, the back engraved "GW" with mounts for a pin, but pin is missing.

Martha Washington to Elias Hasket Derby of Salem, Massachusetts, passed down through the Derby family until acquired by Gebelein Silversmiths of Boston, Massachusetts. Acquired by the family of consignor from Gebelein around 1970. Lot includes 19th century letters regarding a related lock of Washington's hair that is not part of this lot.
