United States, late 19th century.
Stained mahogany architectural fragment carved in high relief to depict U.S. President Washington (1732-99) emerging from a boat beside an allegorical figure of Liberty or Columbia holding a spangled flag, Washington holding a scroll inscribed "Freedom of AMERICA / Goodwill to all" in his left hand, all within pseudo-Baroque maritime scenery that includes gargoyles, a trumpeting cherub, and sea serpent, 152cm wide, 20cm deep, 96cm high (60in wide, 8in deep, 38in high).
