On one sheet of lined paper folded in half, four pages of writing, dated Long Branch, N.J., July 11, 1872, addressed to George W. Curtis, Esq. Grant responds to an inquiry about civil service reform and says that he endeavors "to carry about those rules as strictly as possible," going on to discuss controversies surrounding several of his appointees. With typed transcription (fold marks, wrinkling of pages), 10 x 15 1/2 in.
