Cleveland, Grover (1837-1908), Autograph Letter Signed

On three sides of a sheet of paper folded in half, letterhead of the Executive Mansion, Albany, dated October 24, 1884. Writing to Hon. George William Curtis, Cleveland states, "I am of course a democrat attached to the principles of that party; and if elected I desire to remain true to that organization. But I do not think partisan zeal should lead to the 'arbitrary dismissal for party or political reasons' of officials of the class above referred to [those of "an un-political character"], who have attended strictly to their public duty and have not engaged in party service..." (fold marks, few light marks and stains on blank back page), 8 x 9 ½ in. With typed transcription and portrait of Cleveland "drawn from a copyright photo by Pach Bros."
