Adams, John (1735-1826), Autograph Letter Signed

On two sides of one sheet folded in half, dated Quincy, Nov. 11, 1796, from John Adams as Vice-President to his son Thomas Boylston Adams (fold marks, slightly chipped at three points along the outside edge, some waviness in the paper toward the vertical fold), 9 1/2 x 16 in.
The letter begins, "Dear Thomas, Your letter to your Mamma, the latter part of August giving so agreable an account of your health has given me great Joy. I cannot be very particular with you at present but if you should be appointed Minister in the Succession to your Brother, accept and act for the present. I know not the Presidents Intentions. If No Minister should be appointed, remain Charge des Affaires for the present, and untill you hear further from me. I long to see you, but I would not have you leave the Public Service, unhandsomely."
