[Paris Commune]

Photograph album, Carte de visite album, red morocco-covered boards with black stamped geometrical design, watered-silk endpapers, brass clasps, containing portraits of leaders and members of the Paris Commune of 1871, including the painter Gustave Courbet, Minister of Justice Eugene Protot, and Louise Michel, whose name, according to a clipping pasted in next to her photo, "will be prominent as heading the roll of the army of Amazons that surpassed even the men in fanaticism." 19 photos in all, each notated on the mount in a contemporary hand stating name, eventual fate, and in some cases role played in the revolution. With a letter on black-bordered stationery, dated 1871, tipped to the front endpaper, and an envelope laid in marked "The Communists of Paris 1871" and containing three illustrations mounted on card with some relevance to the Commune (spine missing, front cover detached, toning to album mounts, chipping to mounts with some small closed tears, one clasp detached), 6 x 8 in.,
