Provenance:
Ex-Lot 150, Collectors' Carousel, Sotheby's New York, 16 June 1994.
Acquired directly from the above sale, then by descent to the current owner.
As of 1994, the 1974 Felt Forum appearance is understood to have been the only time that Bob Dylan sang 'North Country Blues' live, as part of a 15-minute appearance. Dylan sang the song at the request of the event's organiser, protest singer-songwriter Phil Ochs, who drew parallels between the suffering of the Chilean people under the regime at the time, and the following lyric:
"it's much cheaper down in the South American towns / Where the miners work almost for nothing"
Further Research has identified additional images from the Benefit concert showing Dylan with the lyric sheet taped to his microphone on stage. Please contact the department for these further images. Dylan's backstage presence on this same evening was also documented in a series of shots by the renowned photographer Bob Gruen.
