During the filming of The Great Rock n Roll Swindle, John Lydon refused any collaboration in the project and refused to shoot any new footage. Apart from using existing archive footage, McLaren's solution was for Johnny Rotten to appear in the film as an animated cartoon character. This solution was extended so that a number of flashback documentary scenes as well as the final credit sequence, were treated in this way.
The images of Johnny Rotten were used in a sequence in the film where Johnny Rotten is attacked in an alleyway near Oxford Street; it refers to an incident that occurred over the Queen's Silver Jubilee weekend in 1977 when Rotten was attacked in the car park of the Pegasus pub near the Wessex recording studios.
