Born in 1956, Chéri Samba grew up in the rural village of Kinto M'Vuila, in Lower Congo. The eldest of ten siblings, Samba's destiny to follow in his father's footsteps and become a blacksmith seemed to be concrete. However, confident in his ability as a draughtsman, Samba escaped his village life at sixteen and travel to Kinshasa where he recounts:

I walked up and down the great avenues and neighbourhoods with the sign-painters' and ad-painters' studios. (Chéri Samba, edited by André Magnin J'aime Cheri Samba, sous la direction d'André Magnin (Paris: Foundation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, 2004), p. 11.).

In the years following, Samba climbed the professional draughtsman ladder, working between the 'APUZA' and the Mbuta-Masunda studios. His work at these advertising agencies have informed his works shown through the graphic motifs.
