SIGNED TREATY ABOLISHING THE SLAVE TRADE.

Manuscript Warrant Signed twice by King George IV ("George R"), and Prime Minister George Canning ("George Canning") for affixing the Great Seal on the ratification of a peace treaty between Great Britain and Colombia abolishing the slave trade, 30 pp, ink on thick paper, consisting of 2 pp Warrant (signed by Canning, and by King George IV at the head), 22 1/2 pp text of the treaty, with 2 1/2 pp additional article, 1 p Ratification (signed by King George IV), 3 pp blank, 365 x 237 mm, the Court at Windsor Castle, July 25, 1825, the Great Seal affixed next to the King's signature on first leaf, with ribbon, docketed to the verso of final leaf.

BRITAIN AND COLUMBIA AGREE TO ABOLISH THE SLAVE TRADE. With the inevitability of continued Latin American independence from Spain becoming clear, Great Britain sought to establish supremacy in the region through a series of treaties of "Amity, Commerce, and Navigation," at once establishing their presence in the region, recognizing the newly created independent states, and ending the illegal international slave trade. In fact, abolition was a pre-cursor for British recognition of independence, appearing in the King's instructions to his commissioners. In Colombia, Simon Bolivar had been elected President in 1821, who was well-known in Europe and the Americas for his anti-slavery stance, and the comprehensive law passed in Bogotá, July 19, 1821, in fact went even further than British law providing for the eventual emancipation of current slaves. In 1825 Great Britain signed treaties with Argentina, Columbia, and Mexico, which at the time controlled nearly 2/3 of the total territory, giving them powerful footing in the continent, and in particular in the surrounding waters.

This official warrant, containing the entire treaty, as well as its additional clause, and signed by both King George IV and by Prime Minister George Canning was a major contribution to the inexorable march to freedom in the nineteenth century.
