EARLY STONEWALL JACKSON LETTER.

JACKSON, THOMAS J. "STONEWALL." 1824-1863. Letter Signed ("T.J. Jackson") to Captain H.L. Scott requesting additional men for the artillery during the Mexican-American War, 2 pp, bifolium, Mexico, November 11, 1847, additionally endorsed by Major General Gideon Pillow to middle fold rear panel denying Jackson's request, some fading to ink, expertly repaired.
Provenance: Roy Bird Cook (1886-1961, author/collector, published in his The Family and Early Life of Stonewall Jackson, 1947 edition, pp 103-105, "author's collection").

AN EARLY AND INTERESTING STONEWALL JACKSON LETTER FROM THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR. Jackson first distinguished himself the Battle of Chapultepec on September 13, 1847 with his astute field tactics, refusing to retreat even under the orders of his superior, consequently playing a major role in the U.S. Army victory. He was promoted for his actions. Two months later, he writes here to Captain H.L. Scott requesting additional men for his artillery, making the argument that the men he is requesting are already trained, and that the new recruits they have been awaiting will not be, and thus would make better infantry. Even though he already has the approval of his direct report, Captain Magruder, Scott forwards the request to General Pillow, who denies Jackson. An interesting letter exhibiting Jackson's already astute military intelligence during a formative period.
