8vo (200 x 117 mm). Contemporary calf, ruled in gilt, spine with 5 raised bands and morocco lettering piece. Joints failing, corners bumped, top and bottom portions of front free endpaper torn away, stains and browning, ink notations on rear endpapers.
Provenance: Garrit Ledikker to John Low (inscription on last leaf dated 1776).

FIRST EDITION, subscriber's copy belonging to Garrit Ledikker, whose name appears in the list of subscribers at the back. Inscribed on the verso of the final blank (2Q4) "John Low Capt. — His Books Bought of Garret Ledicker [sic] Parson of a parish in New Jersey — Price 12/ york currency — October ye 21. Anno Domini 1776." Edwards was a pivotal figure in the "Great Awakening" in the American church during the 18th century. This work is one of the most important expositions of his philosophy, based upon Romans 9:16, that any person is free to make a moral choice for the good, but those choices are guided by the preordination of God's will.
