AMERICAN SATIRICAL PRINTS.

DOOLITTLE, AMOS. 1754-1832. The Complete Prodigal Son Series. 4 hand-colored engraved prints, New Haven, CT, 1814, comprising "The Prodigal Son Receiving his Patrimony," "The Prodigal Son Revelling with Harlots," "The Prodigal Son in Misery," and "The Prodigal Son Returned to his Father." Approximately 370 x 270 mm, browning and soiling, slight chipping to corners.

Doolittle was best known for engravings that illustrated the events of the American Revolution, but this set of four prints cast the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son with contemporary characters. A young man receives his inheritance, wastes it on debauchery, and ends up in poverty and disgrace. Shadwell, American Printmaking pp 112-113; O'Brien, Doolittle pp 79-85; Stauffer, American Engravers pp 539-541.
