COMPREHENSIVE COMPENDIUM OF MAGIC.

DELRIO, MARTIN ANTONIO. 1551-1608. Disquisitionum Magicarum Libri Sex. Louvain: Gerardus Rivius, 1599-1600.
Volumes 1 and 2 (of 3) in one, 4to (198 x 143 mm), engraved title vignette. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, large central Imperial device of Rudolph II on upper cover, initials "DPPAL" and date 1601 in panels above and below, brass catch plates, claps missing, blue edges. Lacking folding table in vol 2 and without addition title pages found in some copies.
Provenance: D. Paulus Pistoricus (ownership inscription on title and initials on binding "D. Paulus Pistorcius a Luczka Decanus in Carlstain Domni S. Nicolai Pragae, cius catalo: C. No. 30"); Prague, Jesuit College, 1691 (ownership inscription on title).

FIRST EDITION of this important comprehensive compendium of magic, witchcraft and the supernatural printed in about 25 subsequent editions until 1755. Disquisitionum Magicarum, is "a careful synthesis of witchcraft that drew connections with mathematics, astrology, alchemy, and other disciplines, and argued that the surge in witchcraft was rooted in the spread of "heresy" during the Reformation" (Newberry). "In many ways [this work is] the most complete of all the works on witchcraft and as renowned as the Malleus Maleficarum" (Robbins).
