LEIBNIZ, GOTTFRIED WILHELM. 1646-1716.

Autograph letter signed ("Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz") to "Mon Patron" (Ludolf Hugo) dating a 11th century document, 2 ½ pages, 4to (208 x 159 mm), Wolfenbüttel, 10 August, 1691. A few pin holes to fold.

German polymath, mathematician, scientist, historian, philosopher and diplomat Leibniz responds to Ludolf Hugo (1632-1704) regarding the dating of an 11th century document relating to the House of Welf. Appointed by the Duke Ernst August of Braunschweig-Lueneburg in 1685 Leibniz studied the history of the House of Welf. To prove his point Leibniz supplies a chart with detailed calculations arriving at the conclusion that the document in question was from 1071. Leibniz, is considered to be the "father of computer science" for his groundbreaking contributions to the theory and practice of computing. In 1691 Leibniz discovered the technique of separation of variables for ordinary differential equations.

Exceedingly rare autograph letter. See Leibniz, Sämtliche Schriften und Briefen, Berlin, 1964, Akademie Verlag, volume 7, number 5.
