4to (270 x 210 mm). 15 plates comprising a folding aquatint frontispiece; a folding map; a wood-engraved plate; a full-page plan of Kilauea volcano; and 8 aquatint views and 3 engraved portraits. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, rebacked preserving original gilt spine label. Intermittent foxing, boards rubbed.
Provenance: Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet (bookplate). Sir Robert Peel twice served as the British Prime Minister (1834-1835 & 1841-1846).

FIRST EDITION. Recounts Byron's journey to return the bodies of King Kamehameha II and Queen Kamamalu to Hawaii. The voyage, described by Sir Peter Buck as "one of the most gracious acts that one country has ever extended to another" (Forbes), was commissioned by the British government with Byron in command. This copy with interesting provenance with the bookplate of the British Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, one of the founders of the modern Conservative Party.
