HE KUMULIPO [HAWAIIAN CREATION CHANT].

He Pule Hoolaa Alii he Kumlulipo no Ka I-Imamao a Ia Alapai Wahine. [An Account of the Creation of the World.] Honolulu: Hui Pa'Ipalapala Elele, 1889.
8vo (212 x 141 mm). Original printed gray wrappers, custom folder. Foxed, tiny hole to title, lower fore-edge corner dampstained, wrappers chipped and with repair.

FIRST HAWAIIAN-LANGUAGE EDITION of the traditional Hawaiian creation chant, published with support by King Kalakaua. The Kumulipo was written in honor of Kalaninuiamamao, a prince of the Big Island of Hawaii and an ancestor of Queen Lili'uokalani, who prepared the first English-language edition, not published until 1897. Forbes speculates that this 1889 publication may have been published to support Kalakaua family's claim to the Hawaiian throne. Forbes 4095.
