FIRST EDITION of this rare account of the U.S. screw steamer Tuscarora, which, in the course of its sounding of a route between the U.S. and Japan, stopped in Honolulu just before the death of King Lunalilo. The present volume provides an account of the events surrounding the death including the Royal Elections February 12, 1874 and the Honolulu Courthouse riot that followed when the followers of Queen Emma attacked the supporters of King Kalakaua. 150 American marines and sailors from the Tuscarora under command of Lieutenant Commander Theodore F. Jewell and 70-80 Britons under Captain Edward Hood Lingard Ray from the sloop HMS Tenedos were sent to break up the riot keep the peace afterwards. Rare. No copies listed in Rare Book Hub.
