Folio (544 x 365 mm). Dedication page, tinted lithographic title, 25 tinted lithographic plates by Louis and Charles Haghe after the author, descriptive text leaf and advertising leaf printed in blue. Rebacked contemporary quarter green morocco and cloth, gilt titles on spine. Rubbed, corners bumped, soiling to cloth, scattered foxing, light chipping to fore-edges.
Provenance: The Max and Peter Allen Collection.

FIRST EDITION. Atkinson was a surgeon during the First Anglo–Afghan War when he drew these scenes of Afghanistan. He was with the Army of the Indus on the march to Kabul in 1839, but returned to Bengal in 1841, thus avoiding the disastrous retreat from Kabul in 1842.
