8vo (202 x 127 mm). 3 engraved plates. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, rebacked. Plates toned, a few instances of light foxing, a few leaves creased, boards rubbed.
Provenance: Samuel Phillips (ownership signatures to front pastedown).

FIRST EDITION of the first book exclusively on New Zealand. John Savage was a British surgeon who had worked in Australia, where he was responsible for carrying out the first successful smallpox inoculation. His ship stopped in the Bay of Islands on a return trip from England, which was when he gathered the information for the present work. Includes much on the Maori people including an extensive vocabulary of their language, geography, agriculture and resources.
