LARTET, LOUIS. 1840-1899.

Exploration géologique de la Mer Morte de la Palestine et de l'Idumée. Paris: Arthus Bertrand, [ca. 1876-1877].
Folio (343 x 265 mm). 4 double-page colored engraved plates, 10 full-page lithographic plates, illustrations in text. Modern half morocco and marbled boards. Some foxing to early leaves, creasing and wear to edges of folding plates, light browning.

FIRST EDITION. Geologist and paleontologist Louis Lartet accompanied the Duc de Luynes on his scientific expedition to the Dead Sea in 1864-1865, conducting research as part of his doctoral thesis. His greatest fame came a few years later, however, when in 1868 he conducted excavations around the French village of Les Eyzies, where some prehistoric human bones and artifacts had been discovered. The bones he found turned out to be the first evidence of Cro-Magnon human ancestors, distinct from Neanderthal remains found more than a decade earlier.
