A U.S. 10-STAR SERVICE FLAG.

A machine-sewn wool flag with 10 applique blue stars on a white field surrounded by a red border, 67 ¼ x 47 ¼ inches framed to 55 x 75 inches. Very light toning, generally good condition.
Provenance: Acquired by the Zaricor Flag Collection in 1981 from Moss Landing, CA.
Publications: Madaus, Howard M., Dr, Whitney Smith. The American Flag: Two Centuries of Concord and Conflict. Santa Cruz: VZ Publications, 2006, p. 128.
Exhibitions: The American Flag: Two Centuries of Concord & Conflict. First and Second Presidio Exhibits, Jan-Feb and May-July 2003.

If the single star service flag is designed for families who have a member in the active services, this multi-star flag is designed for public institutions—schools, churches, colleges, fraternities, places of business, etc.—to announce that they have multiple members who are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. This was an early acquisition for the Zaricor Flag Collection, purchased directly from a military supply store near Fort Ord. This piece is marked with a black ink star on the upper hoist corner near the grommet; it is also cryptically inscribed TCW."
