JOHNSON'S "LET US CONTINUE" SPEECH, SIGNED.

JOHNSON, LYNDON BAINES. 1908-1973. Remarks of the President to a Joint Session of Congress. Printed official transcript, signed ("Lyndon B. Johnson") at upper right, legal 4to, 4 pp recto and verso, Washington DC, Office of the White House Press Secretary, November 27, 1963, with the full text of Johnson's important first speech to Congress as President. Folded at center, slight browning.

Following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Johnson was sworn in as President on the flight back to Washington, DC from Dallas. Former president Dwight D. Eisenhower met with Johnson at the White House shortly after his return and urged him to deliver a speech to both houses of Congress, to show the nation stability and continuity of leadership in the wake of the tragedy. Five days after the assassination he delivered this address—what came to be known as the "Let Us Continue" speech.
