LAWRENCE'S AUTOGRAPH MAPS FOR "CRUSADER CASTLES."

LAWRENCE, T.E. 1888-1935. 2 autograph manuscript maps of Palestine and Upper Syria, each approximately 495 x 380 mm, undated (but 1909), in ink on thin tracing paper, traced in Lawrence's hand from maps given to him by H. Pirie-Gordon, the Palestine map inscribed by Lawrence: "Palestine. Shewing the chief routes & the intervisibility of the Central & Southern System [of castles]. A line [purple line] from one place to the other shows that the two are mutually visible. [yellow line] Chief Routes. From C.H.C. Pirie-Gordon 1908," and the Syria map with similar annotation. Folded, some chipping mostly in blank areas, reinforced at top edges on verso, browning.
Provenance: Sold Christies, New York, December 10, 1990, lot 43.

ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT MAPS FOR CRUSADER CASTLES. These maps were traced by Lawrence from maps prepared by Pirie-Gordon during a horseback tour of the region in 1908. Along with his degree, Lawrence obtained a fellowship that took him to archeological work in Palestine, and in turn to his unique involvement in the Arab world during World War I. In preparation for his walking tour of Syria in 1909, Pirie Gordon gave him his manuscript originals, which Lawrence returned to him (presumably after making these copies. Pirie Gordon tells the story of Lawrence returning his originals in 1909, now stained with blood after Lawrence was attacked and left for dead by Kurds who mistakenly believed he carried treasure. An expanded version of his thesis was published as Crusader Castles in 1936, along with the letters he wrote home during his exploration. Early autograph material from Lawrence is exceedingly rare. See H. Pirie-Gordon in T. E. Lawrence by His Friends, pp 73-75.
