1904 ST. LOUIS OLYMPICS PARTICIPATION MEDAL.

Octagonal medallion in gilt bronze, 39 mm across, by Dieges & Clust, suspended from a red and white striped ribbon by a wire loop at the top edge, 32 grams, maker-marked on lower edge. Surfaces slightly scuffed, light edge marks, otherwise extremely fine to about uncirculated.

An unattributed participant's medal for the first Olympic Games held outside of Europe, in conjunction with the St. Louis World's Fair that year. 651 athletes took part in the games, but only 62 of them were from countries outside of North America, as the journey from foreign countries to St. Louis, in the American heartland, was arduous in the days before air travel. The U.S. would not host the Olympic games again until 1932, when the summer games were held in Los Angeles, and the winter games in Lake Placid, New York.
