SIDNEY, PHILIP. 1554-1586.

The Countess of Pembrokes Arcadia. London: [Richard Field] for William Ponsonbie, 1598.
Folio (277 x 190 mm). Woodcut headpieces and initials. Old (19th century?) rebacking in calf, retaining contemporary calf covers, spine with 5 raised bands, morocco gilt lettering piece. Lacking leaves ¶1-3 and 3B7 (front blank, title page, dedication page, and 2 final blank); binding heavily rubbed and chipped at edges and corners, joints starting, first leaf of text re-margined at gutter, several leaves with repaired tears, browning, soiling and scattered ink marks.

Third printing, with "sundry new additions." Originally published in 1590, and again in 1593 including additions from his sister Mary Herbert (the dedicatee), Sir Philip Sidney's poem "Arcadia" was a profound influence on Shakespeare, in particular the Gloucester plot of King Lear. C.S. Lewis called it "Shakespeare's book, Charles I's book, Milton's book, Lamb's book, our own book" (English Literature in the Sixteenth Century, 1954, p 333). ESTC S111864; Grolier Langland to Wither 215; STC 22541.
