RARE PIECE OF WHITMANIANA AND EARLY GAY RIGHTS.

CARPENTER, EDWARD. 1844-1929. Some Friends of Walt Whitman: A Study in Sex-Psychology. London: Printed for the British Society for the Study of Sex Psychology, 1924.
(Publication no. 13). 8vo. Publisher's printed blue wrappers, stringbound.
Provenance: Pauline and Ozzy Fletcher (bookplate to paste-down); sold to our consignor.

FIRST EDITION OF CARPENTER'S EXPLORATION OF WHITMAN'S RELATIONSHIP TO MEN. Carpenter was an early proponent of Gay Rights, and the British Society for the Study Sex Psychology was one of the first institutions actively working for that purpose. Also a friend of Whitman, Carpenter and his partner George Merrill became the inspiration for E.M. Forster's Maurice, and indirectly D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover. Carpenter's Friends of Whitman is rare in commerce, and this is a particularly bright copy.
WITH: Two additional copies, with condition issues: the first chipping to the corners, stamp to title page; the second, tears to the upper cover and first 6 pages.
