MEMORIAL TO WHITMAN.

WHITMAN, WALT. 1819-1892 Two Rivulets. Including Democratic Vistas, Centennial Songs, and Passage to India. Camden, NJ: [Printed for Whitman by New Republic Print], 1876.
8vo (194 x 114 mm). Portrait photograph of Whitman by Pearsall, unsigned, mounted on a leaf with credit beneath, and inserted on stub as frontispiece. Publisher's beige half-calf over marbled boards, wear to covers, boards stitched back in place with thread.
Provenance: Pauline and Ozzy Fletcher (bookplate to paste-down); sold to our consignor.

FIRST EDITION, ASSOCIATION COPY, WITH CONTEMPORARY INSCRIPTION TO ENDPAPER, "Grasses at the / Sea's edge / Marion Coates / Anne Montgomerie / Horace Traubel / March 7th / 1896 in America," in an unknown hand, but likely English feminist reformer, and Whitman devotee, Marion Coates. This copy is one of 100 copies with single ad leaf inserted between rear endpapers, although the frontispiece remains unsigned here, and likely inserted, and the binding joints have been repaired in an unorthodox manner. This copy in the binding of the second printing, with half-titles and textual changes noted by Myerson. Myerson A9.1.b.
