WHITMAN AUTOGRAPH NOTE.

WHITMAN, WALT. 1819-1892. Autograph Note Signed ("Walt Whitman") to R.U. Johnson, 74 x 134 mm, c. 1887. Whitman writes: "For R.U. Johnson, Century office — Best thanks & remembrances to you, dear friend. I arrived home all right Friday before sunset. Thanks for that carriage from the studio to the ferry." Light soiling and spotting, slight ink bleeding through card.
Provenance: Collection of Pauline and Ozzy Fletcher; sold to our consignor.

Robert Underwood Johnson (1853-1937) worked for The Century beginning in 1873 and would eventually come to run it. Likely, this note commemorates Whitman's September 1887 visit to Dora Wheeler's studio, where she painted her famous portrait of the poet at 68, and which Underwood accompanied him to the sitting.
