8vo (196 x 115 mm). Photographic portrait signed by Whitman, trimmed and inserted on verso of front fly; original frontispiece leaf and portrait removed. Publisher's cream half-calf, joints strengthened, staining.
Provenance: Pauline and Ozzy Fletcher (bookplate to paste-down); sold to our consignor.

FIRST EDITION, SIGNED PORTRAIT OF WHITMAN INSERTED, one of 100 copies of the first issue with single ad leaf inserted between rear endpapers. The true signed Author's Edition, but the signed frontispiece portrait has been removed from opposite the title page, trimmed and re-mounted to verso of front fly. This copy in the binding of the second printing, with half-titles and textual changes noted by Myerson. Myerson A9.1.b.
