RARE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS.

WHITMAN, WALT. 1819-1892 Passage to India. Washington, D.C. (New York): Printed for Whitman by J.S. Redfield, 1871.
8vo (205 x 115 mm). Publisher's light green wrappers, uncut, leaves unopened, hinges strengthened, title page detached and laid in, some chipping to wrappers. Custom cloth folding chemise, and green morocco-backed slipcase.
Provenance: Collection of Pauline and Ozzy Fletcher; sold to our consignor.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, AN UNCUT COPY IN WRAPPERS. Later issues were incorporated into Leaves of Grass. Whitman himself said of Passage to India: "I endeavor to celebrate in my own way, the modern engineering masterpieces, the Pacific Railroad & the Suez Canal — in fact, the great modern material practical energy & works — & then make of them as heights and apices whereby to reach freest, widest, loftiest spiritual fields." According to Traubel, Whitman also noted, "There's more of me, the essential ultimate me, in that than in any of the poems" (With Walt Whitman in Camden, pp 156-7). Myerson A5.1.a.
