SECOND EDITION LEAVES OF GRASS.

WHITMAN, WALT. 1819-1892 Leaves of Grass. Brooklyn, New York: [Self-published], 1856.
12mo (155 x 98 mm). Publisher's green cloth, gilt, with Emerson quote to spine, minor foxing. Morocco-backed custom drop-back box.
Provenance: Louise Amelia Barrowcliffe (nee Denton) (numerous inscriptions to endpapers); Pauline and Ozzy Fletcher (bookplate to paste-down); sold to our consignor.

FINE SECOND EDITION OF LEAVES OF GRASS. Published just one year after the first, the second edition added another 20 poems, but runs to an astounding 356 pages. Whitman, without permission, had Emerson's laudatory letter adapted in gilt to the spine of the binding: "I greet you at the beginning of a great career." He also appended assorted press (most of which he wrote himself), and reprinted Emerson's letter in full, as backmatter for the edition. Notably, this edition also includes the first appearance of the poem "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" (as "Sun-Down Poem," pp 211-222). Myerson A2.2.
