Wanderings of a Pilgrim, in Search of the Picturesque. London: Pelham Richardson, 1850.
2 volumes. Large 8vo (280 x 189 mm). 49 plates (20 chromolithographic or colored by hand), folding lithographic panorama of the Himalayas in pocket at end of volume I. Publisher's red cloth, pictorially stamped in gilt, modern cloth-covered clamshell box. Re-cased with new endpapers, repair to chipping at spine ends, corners bumped, covers slightly soiled, light staining, some fingermarks.
Provenance: The Max and Peter Allen Collection.

FIRST EDITION. Fanny Parks arrived in India in 1822, as the wife of a civil servant in the East India Company. Stationed at Allahabad, she travelled extensively, visiting Agra, Fatehgarh, Cawnpore, Meerut, Delhi, and Landour in the Himalayas. As a woman she was able to enter the Zenana, witnessing marriage and religious ceremonies not reported on by male writers. Volume 2 includes chapters on Cape Town and South Africa.
