MATISSE AND JOYCE SIGNED EDITION OF ULYSSES.

Large 4to. 6 etched plates by Matisse, 20 reproductions of Matisse's sketches printed on blue and yellow paper. Later green morocco ruled and titled in gilt, spine with 5 raised bands. Joints rubbed, spine sunned, pages slightly wrinkled from water exposure, red ink page numbers and headers running.

LIMITED EDITION, number 735, ONE OF ONLY 250 COPIES SIGNED BY BOTH MATISSE AND JOYCE on the limitation page. Of a total edition of 1500 copies signed in pencil by Matisse, 250 randomly numbered copies were also signed in ink by Joyce. According to legend, Joyce stopped signing under the impression that Matisse had not read the book, but contracts reveal that he only agreed to signed 250 copies (possibly because his failing eyesight made it too painful).
