4to (348 x 257 mm). Lithographic frontispiece, title, and 59 lithographic plates printed on india paper and mounted, each with accompanying text. Contemporary half diced calf and textured cloth, gilt titles on spine, marbled edges. Heavily rubbed, chipping to spine ends and corners, offsetting, some browning and foxing.
Provenance: The Max and Peter Allen Collection.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Luard was a British Army officer and veteran of Waterloo, whose artistic skills led him to this work and others utilizing his illustrations of India, as well A History of the Dress of the British Soldier (1852). Archer & Lightbown, India as viewed by British artists, 1760-1860, pp 142-143.
