Footnotes

A long-term resident of Beijing, New York-born Michael Cherney, whose Chinese name is Qui Mai, specializes in atmospheric photographs that reflect his extensive travels throughout China and his profound understanding and appreciation of traditional ink landscape painting, especially of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). The subject of the present set is the five mountain peaks in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. Cherney's works are in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
