Like many contemporary Japanese women ceramists Hattori abandoned vessel forms soon after graduating, preferring to specialize in sculpture. Using a painstaking, time-consuming technique that restricts her annual output to about half a dozen works, she applies countless individual paper-thin shavings of clay to her coil-built sculptural forms until the entire surface is covered, inside and out.
