Wood tomobako storage box inscribed Seiji ōzara (Large celadon dish) and signed and sealed Shinobu
15 1/8in (38.5cm) diam

Footnotes

For more than half a century Kawase Shinobu has specialized in making stoneware with a green, bluish, or gray-green hue achieved by firing a glaze containing iron oxide in an atmosphere starved of oxygen. Taking their inspiration from Chinese wares of the Southern Song dynasty (1128-1279), his instantly recognizable cusped or crimped vessels are a much-prized contemporary re-interpretation of a classic East Asian ceramic tradition.
