A self-taught artist from Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, Ogata Kamio specialized in an extremely fine and delicate form of neriage (marbleized clay), contrasting hundreds of layers of colored clay with crimping and pleating to create dazzling optical effects. His works are in the collections of several leading American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
