Still little known outside his native country, Misaki was inspired to embark on a career in clay thanks to an encounter with legendary ceramics scholar Koyama Fujio (1900-1975). He has described his pursuit of form and color as "Rothko-ing," perhaps referring not just to the serene two-tone palette seen in this recent example of his work but also to the meditative process that underlies his practice.
