Footnotes

Channeling influences from the post-war Kyoto avant garde, the Mingei ("People's Art") folk-craft movement, porcelain specialist Fukami Sueharu (also featured in this catalogue, see lots 808, 823, and 834), and, perhaps, Mihara Ken (see lot 810), Moriyama is one of the rising stars of contemporary Japanese ceramics. His swirling, dynamic sculptures are already in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
