A CARVED AND LACQUERED WOOD SEATED FIGURE OF BUDDHA

17th century
Well carved seated in dhyanasana, wearing layered robes falling in crisp graceful folds around the body, the face with gentle, contemplative expression and pendant ears, (missing curled hair applique), painted overall in dark black-red lacquer.
17 7/8in (45.5cm) high, wood stand (2).

十七世紀 棕漆木刻佛坐像

See another smaller meditating wooden Luohan with lacquer coating and delicate features dated to the Yuan/Ming dynasties and sold at Koller, Zurich, 30 September 2008, lot 207. See also a gilt-lacquer seated manjusri, dated 16/17th century sold at Christie's New York, 19 March 2008, lot 395.

Compare a bearded figure of Manjusri clothed in very similar fashion, in the Chongshan Temple, Taiyuan, Shanxi province, illustrated in Buddhist Sculpture of Shanxi Province, Beijing, 1991, pl. 82 and back cover.
