TWO UNUSUAL PAINTED WOOD MALE FIGURES

Ming dynasty
Each of very light weight and possibly palm wood, the larger standing figure depicting an attendant wearing a black cap, futou, and his face painted with flesh-colored pigments with black highlights and with a cloth draped over his clutched hands, his robe lightly painted in a pale green with simple rounded collar, and delicately carved with gently falling folds to his protruding feet and tied at the waist with a black and red-painted belt; the smaller standing figure set in a wide stance on a rounded oval base, and leaning, slightly quizzically, to one side and holding a tray, or possibly an open book, his robes with traces of green pigment and his face with white piments.
11 1/16in and 7 5/8in (28.2cm and 19cm) high (2).
