A 1981 PORTRAIT OF LOUGANIS MID-DIVE, SIGNED.

Color photograph, image of Louganis mid-air, likely taken at the Mission Viejo Aquatic Center, 355 x 278 mm (14 x 11 inches), signed "Greg Louganis" at lower right and stamped on the verso "Print made by Kodak / June 81."

Louganis is in the same swimsuit as in lot 6, and this image is likely from the same sitting.

Louganis and his coach Ron O'Brien thought it very possible he could win two gold medals at the Moscow Summer Games, and Louganis worked diligently toward that goal. Unfortunately, there was no 1980 US Olympic Team, as President Carter demonstrated the US's disapproval of the invasion of Afghanistan by boycotting the Moscow Games. The boycott was less traumatic for Louganis, who had many years left of competition, than it was for other athletes for whom 1980 represented their last chance at gold. Despite the boycott, the trials were still held at the end of June in Austin, TX. Greg came in first in both springboard and platform, even after he cut his palm on a pipe at the bottom of the pool on his first platform dive.
