GREG LOUGANIS'S DIVING BRIEFS FROM THE 1976 SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES IN MONTREAL.

Men's diving brief trunks, "Mark Spitz" by Arena, size 30, in red, white and blue with repeating "USA" flag pattern, some wear and age as expected.
Provenance: part of Louganis's Team USA gear given to him upon his arrival in Montreal in July of 1976; sold Heritage Auctions, November 5, 2010, lot 81116 (partial); sold RR Auction, January 2023, lot 6117, and returned by the purchaser to Greg Louganis.

Louganis can be seen wearing this distinctive pair of Team USA swim trunks in most of the press about his 1976 Olympics appearance (see lot 3). The Italian brand Arena was born in 1973 when entrepreneur Horst Dassler (of Adidas) partnered with Mark Spitz, the American swimmer who won 7 gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics, to produce a new line of competitive swimwear using state-of-the-art technologies. The partnership was so successful that by 1976 Arena had the Team USA Olympics concession.
