A HERB RITTS PORTRAIT OF GREG LOUGANIS.

RITTS, HERB. 1952-2002. Gelatin silver print portrait of Louganis, 355 x 278 mm (14 x 11 inches), signed ("Greg Louganis") at lower right and stamped by the photographer (©Herb Ritts) to verso.

An Old-Hollywood-style portrait of Greg Louganis, c.1985, from a sitting with the 1980s photographer famous for evoking the glamour of an earlier era. After coming away from the Los Angeles games with two gold medals, Greg Louganis was a legitimate star. He continued at the top of his game competitively, going undefeated in the 1985 season, while also enjoying his celebrity. Louganis sat for celebrity photographer Herb Ritts in 1985. The most famous image from that sitting is called "Greg Louganis, Hollywood" and shows Greg in a swimsuit posing atop a draped seat with his arms on one raised knee, a clear evocation of Old Hollywood muscle glamour. The present image also owes to the photographic tradition of George Hurrell and Clarence Sinclair Bull, using as it does light and shadow to emphasize Greg's classic good looks.
