VAN BUREN ON MONETARY THEORY.

VAN BUREN, MARTIN. 1782-1862. Autograph Letter Signed ("M. Van Buren") to W. Van Buren complaining about the banking system and its effects on the economy, 6 pp recto and verso, 8vo, Lindenwald, December 2, 1857, Some creasing and toning, stains and mounting remnants at margins of p 1 and 6, matted and framed. WITH: Autograph Sentiment Signed ("M. Van Buren"), 1 p, 3 x 4 inches, Lindenwald, April 14, 1858, With my respects," matted and framed.

In his later years, Van Buren writes to an acquaintance (possibly a relative) discussing the same financial issues that were in play during his presidency: the question of whether or not to establish a gold standard for U.S. currency. In part: "... the merchants & manufacturers, my dear Sir, have lived too long upon banks ... to leave ground for hope that the Banks will ever be dispensed with. All I fear that is left for good men to do, is to call public attention to their assets & [?] for their removal. / What would you think of dispensing with public securities in the banking Department, & of requiring specie for any bill that is issued?"
