ROBERT SPRING FORGERY OF GEORGE WASHINGTON.

Autograph Check Signed ("Go: Washington") paid to the order of John Eager Howard in the amount of $770, oblong 12mo, Mount Vernon, January 26, 1799 (but 19th century), leaf toned, laid down to mount, matted and framed.

Robert Spring (1813-1876) was an English-born antiquarian bookseller who, sometime around the mid-19th century, began forging letters by Washington and Franklin, among others. Originally, Spring used a supply of blank printed checks from the Office of Discount and Deposit in Baltimore which he would then fill and sign using Washington's name. When the printed supply was exhausted, he created the check from whole cloth, as he has done here.
