Narrative of an Expedition to the Source of St. Peter's River, Lake Winnepeek, Lake of the Woods, etc. etc. Performed in the Year 1823.... Philadelphia: H.C. Carey & I. Lea, 1824.
2 volumes. 8vo. Engraved folding map, and 15 engraved plates. Early 20th-century morocco-backed marbled paper boards, minor occasional foxing.
FIRST EDITION. THE PRIMARY SOURCE ON STEPHEN H. LONG'S IMPORTANT SECOND EXPEDITION to explore the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Keating, a professor of mining and chemistry, was appointed geologist and historiographer of the expedition. Field describes the work as "almost a cyclopedia of material, relating to the Indians of the explored territory. Nothing escaped the attention of the gentlemen who accompanied the expedition; and their statements regarding the customs, character, and numbers of the Sioux and Chippeway tribes, are among the most valuable we have of those people." Field 949; Howes K-20; Sabin 37137; Wagner-Camp 26b:1.
