8vo (225 x 157 mm). 3 engraved plates (2 hand-colored, 1 folding), wood-engraved illustrations in text. Contemporary black boards, paper lettering piece on spine. Rubbed, slight chipping to spine ends, browning and foxing, adhesive residue to front paste-down.
Provenance: Dr. Henry Gans (bookplate, detached and loosely inserted).

FIRST EDITION of this collection of papers by Virchow, who is acknowledged as the most significant figure in the history of pathology. These papers include the first clear descriptions of thrombosis and embolism, and the first use of the word "leukemia."
